Preparing a site for groundworks: a checklist for developers

What developers and main contractors should have ready before groundworks start, from drawings and surveys to access, services and programme.

Published by Distinctive Paving

Groundworks run to programme when the information and the site are ready before the first excavator arrives. This is the checklist we share with developers and main contractors ahead of a start on site.

Drawings and design

  • Approved layout, levels and drainage drawings
  • Foundation design and engineer’s details
  • Surfacing specifications for roads, parking and footways

Surveys

  • A topographical survey to confirm existing levels
  • Utility searches and, where needed, a ground penetrating radar survey
  • Site investigation and soil information for foundations and soakaways

Access and logistics

  • A safe access route for plant and deliveries
  • Space for welfare, materials and spoil
  • Agreed working hours and any neighbour constraints

Programme

Agree the sequence with your other trades so drainage, ducts and sub bases are in before the building work needs them, and surfacing follows once heavy traffic has finished. Our team handles groundworks and final surfacing, which removes a handover between contractors.

Send us your drawings or tell us about the site. We will review the scope and come back with a clear, itemised quotation.
